Travel Pharmacy
Employment as a travel pharmacist is expected to increase much faster than the average through 2016. As a result of rapid growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupation, travel pharmacists are in high demand. Due to the increasing numbers of middle-aged and elderly people—who use more prescription drugs than younger people—this demand will only continue to rise.
As the use of prescription drugs increases, demand for pharmacists will grow in most practice settings, such as community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, and mail-order pharmacies. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, as the population ages, assisted living facilities and home care organizations should see particularly rapid growth, resulting in new avenues for pharmacists.
A travel pharmacist dispenses drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provides information to patients about medications and their use. During your travel pharmacy assignment you may be required to advise physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects of medications.
As a travel pharmacist you will have the option to choose where and when you will work. You can select from a variety of clinical settings such as small, private pharmacies, large healthcare facilities, and retail pharmacies. Typical assignments last 13 weeks, and upon completion you can either renew at the same facility or move to a new location.
