Speech Therapy
The combination of growth in the speech-language pathology (slp) industry and an expected increase in retirements over the coming years should create excellent job opportunities for speech-language pathologists. Opportunities should be particularly favorable for those SLPs with the ability to speak a second language, such as Spanish. Job prospects also are expected to be especially favorable for those who are willing to relocate, particularly to areas experiencing difficulty in attracting and hiring speech-language pathologists.
A new practice setting has been emerging for SLPs in school-based settings. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, half of the travel speech pathologist population is employed in educational services, primarily in preschools and elementary and secondary schools. Federal law guarantees special education and related services to all eligible children with disabilities.
A travel speech-language pathologist assesses and treats patients with speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders. During some travel SLP assignments, speech-language pathologists may be required to perform research related to speech and language problems.
As a travel speech-language pathologist you will have the option to choose where and when you will work. You can select from a variety of clinical settings such as large healthcare facilities, rural hospitals, and teaching facilities. Typical assignments last 13 weeks, and upon completion you can either renew at the same facility or move to a new location.
